Watership Down - Richard Adams

I know a lot of people love Watership Downs.  I'm not one of them.

I found it really hard to sit down and read it - I couldn't stay focused for more than a couple of chapters at a time, and it's not a long book.  I can't actually pinpoint what it was that I disliked about it.  It's not that nothing happens - lots of things happen.  It's not that there are no adventures - there are lots of adventures.  It's not even that I didn't like the rabbits - I did, for the most part.

More positively - there were things about Watership Down that I did like.  I love Pipkin.  I want to take him home and cuddle him, only he'd miss Hazel.  I like Hazel and Bigwig.  I like Keehar, especially when he got tetchy.  The epilogue made me sad, but I think it was a good epilogue.  Actually, what I liked most was the stories of El-ahrairah (even if I can't pronounce his name.  Actually, I can't pronounce any of their names.); I thought they were lovely.

It's interesting, because the number of elements I liked about Watership Down outnumber the elements I didn't like.  But still, it didn't do anything for me at all.  It was nice, I suppose.  And cute.  But that's about the best I can say for it.

Small fact - my mum bought this copy of Watership Down in 1979.  On the back, it says the RRP is $2.95.  If only!
